NORA Buzz August 2017

As we start our final run into the 2017 October to November ‘Christmas quarter’, I am feeling very upbeat. Whilst the stats from the ABS, NAB Quantium retail data are looking okay, the ‘vibe’ among the eight thousand strong NORA Network is far more cause for cheer.

I have this privileged position of meeting with so many different retailers and service providers into retail, and this diversity of view and voice gives me a very synthesized perspective of how things are tracking. Is everything perfect? Of course not. But the industry has done so much work over the last year, that I can see and feel those green shoots coming through.

The NORA Network is a ‘broad church’, and we celebrate the recent wins of some of our iconic pureplay brands like Kogan and Catch Group, as well as the progress and momentum of some of our largest established retailers like JB Hi Fi and Super Retail Group. The ‘ecosystem’ approach that NORA takes means that diversity remains retail's biggest ally, and that all sectors of the broad retail tapestry need to be going well, including the enabler or vendor base – those in the payments, technology, supply chain, and professional services space. And from where I sit, the tide is starting to lift many boats. Will some get left behind? Sadly, yes – there is a natural “Darwinian” nature to business life cycles, and not all retailers will make the cut, although in many cases we can expect a renewal and renaissance from those who have to reinvent themselves. Adjacencies to retail, including marketplaces and the surging ‘sharing economy’ (collaborative consumption) are two such opportunities for reinvention.
I hope we catch up before October. We have a full schedule of engagements across our Leader Series of lunches, breakfasts and dinners, our fast growing NORA Nibble 30 minute webinars, our Digital Safaris and of course our support and participation in some of Australia’s leading retail related events. Till, then…onward and upwards.

Breaking News: NORA partners with Slingshot on Australia's First Retail Tech Accelerator

NORA is excited to announce a partnership with Slingshot, Australia’s leading corporate accelerator program, on the RetailTech accelerator. RetailTech is 12-week program that will seek out the next generation of disruptive businesses and facilitate their collaboration with some of Australia’s leading retailers and industry leaders.

Competing in the challenging retail space will increasingly be about identifying and aligning with new technologies that give retailers the edge, from customer experience, to shopper marketing, payments, and fulfillment. The most efficient and cost effective way to innovate is to partner with Slingshot.

CEO of Slingshot Karen Lawson believes RetailTech presents a huge opportunity for Australian retailers looking to tap into cutting-edge technologies and ideas by giving them the edge they need to master the art and science of customer engagement. The retail consortium will be joining brands like Qantas, Lion, HCF, SEEK and Hudson who recognise that external innovation is key to being a global leader in a highly competitive landscape.

RetailTech is set to launch later this year and Slingshot and NORA are inviting  up to four retail companies to form a consortium that will see large scale retailers work with leading start ups.  This invitation is being extended to NORA members first before an exclusive announcement is made in the AFR next week.

Customer-centric marketing practices in the spacetime era

The job of the Retail Marketing Manager has changed considerably over the last few years. Whereas in the past it was all about products and Target Audience Rating Points (TARPS), today the focus has moved towards customer relationships and optimising one-to-one interactions – a change facilitated by the explosion in the amount of data that retailers have available to them and the ability we now have to connect with customers virtually anywhere, anytime via connected devices.
Today’s Retail Marketing Manager is distinguished just as much by their deep knowledge of individual customers as by their selection of the most effective media vehicles to promote products. And when moving away from a product-centric marketing practice to one that puts the consumer at the heart of the business, there are four crucial areas of focus that must be taken into consideration.
